OBD-II fault code

P0905: Gate Select Position Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

Electrical fault on the gate selector position sensor used on automated manual transmissions to determine which shift gate is selected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The gate select position sensor tells an automated manual transmission which shift gate the selector has chosen. The controller compares the reported position with the expected range, and this code sets when the position signal is implausible or does not track selector movement correctly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and watch gate select position live data while moving the selector through each gate to identify where the reading becomes implausible.
  2. Inspect the gate select sensor connector and harness for corrosion, looseness, chafing, or intermittent contact.
  3. Check the sensor supply, ground, and signal wiring against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. Use the manufacturer's procedure to check whether the sensor output changes smoothly and consistently across the selector's range.
  5. If the signal is smooth but gate selection remains inaccurate, inspect selector linkage and the gate mechanism for wear, looseness, or misalignment.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the gate select sensor connector and repair poor terminal contact.
  • Repair damaged or intermittently open sensor wiring.
  • Replace a gate select position sensor that fails its range or consistency check.
  • Repair worn or misaligned selector linkage if it causes the position mismatch.

Can I keep driving?

If gear selection is delayed, unreliable, or accompanied by slipping or limp mode, avoid driving because the controller may not know which gate is selected. Arrange prompt diagnosis before relying on the vehicle in traffic.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
