What it means
The drive motor A clutch enable circuit reports a low condition. Hybrid clutch engagement cannot be reliably commanded or verified.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Drive motor A clutch enable is an electrical control path that helps the hybrid system allow or manage engagement of the motor A clutch. The control system monitors its voltage and sets P08E8 when the circuit is below the expected level, such as from a short to ground or an internal short.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wire shorted to ground
- Internal short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check for related hybrid or transmission codes that may identify a shared circuit issue.
- Inspect drive motor A clutch enable wiring and connectors for chafing, moisture, corrosion, loose pins, or heat damage.
- Following the vehicle wiring diagram, check the enable wire for a short to ground with the circuit isolated as specified.
- Check connector terminal condition and circuit continuity, then compare live circuit behavior during a supported command with the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
- If the wiring passes, have the clutch-enable component and control module checked using the manufacturer's hybrid-system procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring shorted to ground in the drive motor A clutch enable circuit.
- Clean or repair corroded or loose enable-circuit connector terminals.
- Repair a damaged ground or high-resistance connection identified during testing.
- Repair or replace a confirmed internally shorted clutch-enable component.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and high-speed driving because the hybrid clutch may not engage reliably, and the vehicle may lose power or enter limp mode. Stop if the drivetrain warning escalates or the vehicle's response becomes unpredictable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
