OBD-II fault code

P08E9: Drive Motor A Clutch Enable Circuit High

What it means

The drive motor A clutch enable circuit reports a high condition. Hybrid clutch engagement cannot be reliably commanded or verified.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive motor A clutch enable is an electrical control path used by the hybrid system to allow or manage motor A clutch engagement. The control system monitors the circuit voltage and sets P08E9 when it is higher than expected, which can occur with a short to battery voltage or a failed pull-down path.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wire shorted to B+
  2. Pull-down resistor open
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check for related hybrid and transmission codes, along with drive motor A clutch enable data.
  2. Inspect the enable-circuit harness and connectors for damaged insulation, contact with a power feed, corrosion, moisture, or loose pins.
  3. With the circuit isolated as specified by the wiring diagram, check whether the enable wire is shorted to battery voltage.
  4. Check connector continuity and the pull-down path using the manufacturer's procedure; do not assume a particular resistor value or test point.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, use a supported scan-tool command and the manufacturer's hybrid diagnostic procedure to isolate the component or module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a drive motor A clutch enable wire shorted to battery voltage.
  • Repair loose or corroded terminals in the enable-circuit connector.
  • Repair an open pull-down path if testing confirms it.
  • Repair or replace a confirmed faulty clutch-enable component or control module.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid high-speed travel or heavy loads because incorrect clutch enable control can cause reduced power or unpredictable hybrid drivetrain operation. Stop if the vehicle loses drive or displays an escalating hybrid-system warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
