What it means
Voltage on the pressure control solenoid L control line is below the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The TCM controls pressure control solenoid L through a monitored control line. P08C1 sets when voltage on that line is below the expected range, which can occur if the wire is shorted to ground, the coil is internally shorted, or a connector fault disrupts the circuit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to ground
- Internal short in solenoid coil
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live circuit readings to confirm solenoid L control voltage is low when the code sets.
- Inspect the L control wire and harness for chafing against ground, pinched sections, or damage near the transmission and TCM connectors.
- Check connector seals and pins for water ingress, corrosion, loose fit, or a pushed-back terminal that could disturb the control voltage.
- Test the solenoid L coil and control wire for a short to ground, using the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s procedure.
- If the harness and solenoid test correctly, check TCM output operation and compare circuit readings with the manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed or pinched wiring shorted to ground in the L control circuit.
- Clean or replace corroded connector terminals and restore damaged seals.
- Replace solenoid L if its coil is internally shorted.
- Repair the TCM driver only if testing confirms it is pulling the control line low incorrectly.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the transmission slips, shifts harshly, or enters limp mode because solenoid L may not regulate pressure properly and continued slipping can damage the transmission. Arrange prompt diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
