What it means
The starter-disable circuit signal is below the expected level. The code alone does not establish whether the starter is disabled.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The starter-disable circuit carries a signal used to inhibit or permit cranking. The control module monitors the signal level and sets P081A when it is lower than expected, which can happen if the wire is grounded or a connection has excessive resistance; the code alone does not show whether starting is actually inhibited.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Disable wire shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for related starting or transmission codes to see when the low signal was detected.
- Check the scan-tool starter-disable status and compare it with actual starting behavior, following the vehicle's safety procedure.
- Inspect the disable wire and connectors for chafing to ground, corrosion, loose pins, or signs of water intrusion.
- Using the wiring diagram, check the circuit for a short to ground and measure voltage drop across suspect connections under the manufacturer's test conditions.
- If the harness and connections pass, test the module or sensor providing the signal and the receiving module input using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean corroded terminals and restore a secure connector fit.
- Repair insulation where the disable wire is chafed or shorted to ground.
- Replace a damaged connector or terminal causing high resistance.
- Repair or replace a confirmed faulty signal source or module.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may not start reliably, or starter inhibition may not work as intended. Avoid repeated cranking if the starter behaves abnormally, and have the circuit checked before depending on the vehicle to prevent unintended starting.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
