OBD-II fault code

P081B: Starter Disable Circuit High

What it means

The starter-disable circuit signal is above the expected level. The code alone does not establish whether the starter can be inhibited.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The starter-disable circuit carries a signal used to inhibit or permit cranking. The control module monitors that signal and sets P081B when it is higher than expected, which can occur if the wire contacts battery voltage; the code alone does not establish whether cranking can still be inhibited.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Disable wire shorted to battery voltage
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and related codes to identify when the starter-disable signal was detected as high.
  2. Check scan-tool data for the starter-disable input and compare it with actual starting behavior using the vehicle's prescribed safety precautions.
  3. Inspect the disable circuit and connectors for a pinched wire, damaged insulation, or a terminal touching a battery-positive feed.
  4. With the wiring diagram, test for an unintended connection to battery voltage and inspect connector pins for corrosion or poor contact.
  5. If the harness is sound, test the signal source and module input according to the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a pinched or chafed wire contacting a battery-positive source.
  • Separate and secure wiring that is touching a B+ feed.
  • Repair corroded or damaged connector terminals.
  • Repair or replace a confirmed faulty signal source or control module.

Can I keep driving?

The starter may not be inhibited as intended, depending on the system design. Do not work near moving engine parts while another person operates the starter, and have unexpected cranking or starting behavior checked promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
