What it means
The driveline disconnect switch input circuit has a fault. The code does not by itself identify which axle is disconnected or how the vehicle uses that input.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The driveline disconnect switch reports whether the driveline disconnect mechanism is in its expected state. The control module monitors the switch input circuit and sets P0818 when its electrical signal is faulty; the code does not identify which axle or driveline component is involved.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open circuit in disconnect switch wiring
- Short to ground or power in the input circuit
- Loose or corroded connector
- Faulty driveline disconnect switch
- Control module circuit fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and read related transmission and driveline codes to learn when the disconnect-switch input fault occurred.
- Check scan-tool data for the driveline disconnect switch while selecting the vehicle's normal operating modes, and compare the reported state with the switch operation described for that vehicle.
- Inspect the disconnect switch, its connector, and the wiring along the driveline for loose plugs, corrosion, damage, or chafing.
- Use the wiring diagram to test the input circuit for an open or short to ground or power, checking connector terminals for poor contact.
- If the circuit tests correctly, test the driveline disconnect switch and then the control-module input according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect a loose switch connector and secure the harness.
- Clean corroded terminals or replace damaged connector pins.
- Repair wiring that is open, chafed, or shorted.
- Replace a driveline disconnect switch that fails its test.
- Repair or replace a control module only after confirming its input circuit is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
The code may affect driveline mode recognition and can be accompanied by transmission warnings or poor shifting. Avoid relying on the disconnect function until it is checked, especially on surfaces or in conditions where the selected driveline mode matters.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
