OBD-II fault code

P07F5: Transmission Range Control Module System Voltage Low

What it means

The transmission range control module system voltage is below the expected level. The cause may be a low supply voltage or a fault in the module's power circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission range control module needs stable system voltage to communicate and carry out its functions. P07F5 sets when its monitored supply voltage falls below the expected level, which may result from a weak battery, charging problem, poor connection, or fault in the module's power circuit.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Weak or discharged battery
  2. Charging system fault
  3. Loose or corroded battery or power connection
  4. Open or high-resistance module power or ground circuit
  5. Short or excessive load in the module power circuit

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check whether the low-voltage event occurred during starting, charging, or transmission operation.
  2. Inspect the battery terminals and accessible module power and ground connections for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  3. Check battery condition and charging system operation using the vehicle's diagnostic procedure.
  4. Measure voltage at the range control module power and ground under the conditions specified by the manufacturer, looking for excessive drop or interruption.
  5. Inspect the module power circuit for an open, high-resistance connection, short, or excessive electrical load.
  6. If supply and ground remain within the manufacturer's specification but the code returns, check the module itself and its voltage monitoring circuit.

Common fixes

  • Charge or replace a weak battery after confirming its condition.
  • Clean and tighten battery, power, or ground connections.
  • Repair a charging system fault that leaves system voltage low.
  • Repair an open, high-resistance, or shorted module power wire.
  • Replace the range control module only after its supply circuit has been verified.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle struggles to start or the transmission shifts abnormally, avoid a long or demanding trip until the voltage fault is checked. Low module voltage can disrupt range communication and shifting, and an underlying charging problem can leave the vehicle unable to restart.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
