OBD-II fault code

P07D7: Stuck in Gear 8

What it means

The transmission control module detected that the transmission is stuck in eighth gear or is not leaving that gear as expected. The code does not identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control module compares the gear it commands with the gear indicated by transmission speed signals. P07D7 sets when the transmission remains in eighth gear or fails to leave eighth as expected; a stuck shift solenoid or friction element can prevent the requested change.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Stuck shift solenoid
  2. Stuck-on friction element

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review commanded and actual gear along with input and output speed data to confirm the eighth-gear condition.
  2. Check for related transmission codes and note whether the fault occurs during a particular upshift or downshift.
  3. Inspect transmission wiring and connectors for damage that could affect the shift-solenoid controls or speed signals.
  4. Use scan-tool output controls and the manufacturer's procedure to assess the relevant shift solenoid response.
  5. If electrical checks pass, have the hydraulic operation and friction elements involved in eighth gear evaluated using manufacturer procedures.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring or connector faults affecting the shift-solenoid circuit.
  • Replace a shift solenoid confirmed stuck or failing its specified test.
  • Repair or replace a sticking hydraulic or friction element if testing confirms it is holding eighth gear.
  • Correct any related fluid or internal transmission fault identified during diagnosis.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid high-speed driving, steep hills, and heavy loads if the transmission stays in eighth gear or shifts unpredictably, since the wrong ratio can reduce control and continued slip can cause damage. If it cannot select a safe usable gear, stop driving and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
