OBD-II fault code

P073F: Unable to Engage Gear 1

What it means

The transmission control module detected that first gear could not be engaged when commanded. The code alone does not identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The TCM commands first gear and checks speed-sensor readings to verify that the expected low gear ratio is present. P073F sets when first gear is requested but the transmission does not achieve it, which can result from shift control, low fluid, hydraulic trouble, or internal damage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid or valve body fault affecting first gear
  2. Low or degraded transmission fluid
  3. Internal clutch or mechanical fault
  4. Transmission control circuit fault

Symptoms

  • First gear does not engage when commanded
  • Transmission warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded gear, reported ratio, and input and output speeds to confirm the failed first-gear command.
  2. Check for related transmission codes that may point to speed sensors, range selection, or shared solenoid control.
  3. Inspect for fluid leaks and verify the fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Check transmission wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose pins, and fluid intrusion affecting shift control.
  5. Use scan data to compare commanded solenoid operation with the actual speed response, then test the first-gear-related solenoid, valve body, and internal components as specified.

Common fixes

  • Correct low fluid and repair any leak.
  • Repair damaged shift-control wiring or connector terminals.
  • Replace a shift solenoid only after testing confirms it is faulty.
  • Repair a valve-body fault preventing first-gear engagement.
  • Repair internal clutch or gear damage identified by diagnosis.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the vehicle cannot reliably engage first gear, especially in stop-and-go traffic or on steep grades. Stop if it slips or loses drive, as continued operation can worsen transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
