OBD-II fault code

P074A: Unable to Engage Gear 2

What it means

The transmission cannot engage gear 2 when it is commanded. The element that should apply for gear 2 — shift solenoid, clutch pack, or band — does not build or hold pressure, so the gear never locks in. Symptoms are slipping, no power transfer in that gear, or a forced limp mode. Causes: a failed shift solenoid, a worn clutch pack, or a valve-body or hydraulic-supply fault on the gear-2 circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission applies a particular combination of clutches, bands, and hydraulic passages to produce second gear. P074A means the module commanded second gear but did not detect the expected gear ratio or power transfer, so second gear did not engage as expected. The fault may lie in gear 2 control, a shift solenoid, hydraulic flow, or an internal friction element.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault in the gear 2 shift control circuit
  2. Shift solenoid stuck or failed
  3. Valve body or hydraulic pressure fault
  4. Internal clutch or mechanical fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review commanded gear, actual gear, input and output speeds, and related transmission codes to confirm when second gear fails to engage.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure, since inadequate or degraded fluid can prevent the gear 2 circuit from applying.
  3. Inspect the transmission harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, or loose contacts, focusing on the gear-shift control circuits.
  4. Use a scan tool and wiring diagram to test the gear 2 shift-control solenoid circuit and verify commanded solenoid operation against the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If electrical checks pass, have the gear 2 hydraulic circuit and internal clutch or band operation assessed using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct fluid level or condition according to the manufacturer's service procedure.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connector contact in the gear 2 shift-control circuit.
  • Replace a failed or stuck shift solenoid identified by testing.
  • Repair a valve body or hydraulic fault that prevents gear 2 from applying.
  • Repair or replace a worn internal clutch or band if inspection confirms failure.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the transmission slips when second gear is commanded, loses drive, or enters limp mode; do not tow or accelerate hard. Repeatedly forcing a slipping second gear can overheat the fluid and damage internal parts.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
