OBD-II fault code

P0716: Input/Turbine Speed Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The transmission input/turbine speed sensor signal is implausible compared to engine RPM and current gear ratio. Often caused by a failing sensor, debris on the reluctor, or wiring noise.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Input/turbine speed sensor A reports transmission input shaft speed to the TCM. P0716 sets when that reading does not agree with engine speed, selected gear, or other speed data, even though a signal is present; sensor drift, debris at the sensing target, or electrical noise can cause the mismatch.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Input speed sensor failed
  2. Wiring/connector fault
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare sensor A's input speed with engine RPM and the reported gear at the time the fault occurred.
  2. Review live data during a cautious road test, if safe, for dropouts or readings that do not track engine speed and gear changes.
  3. Inspect sensor A's connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or routing near sources of electrical interference.
  4. Check the sensor circuit for opens, shorts, poor grounds, and damaged shielding where applicable, following the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. Test sensor A and inspect its sensing target for contamination or damage using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure the connector and repair poor terminal contact at sensor A.
  • Repair damaged wiring or correct harness routing that causes interference or chafing.
  • Clean debris from the sensor or sensing target if the manufacturer's service procedure permits.
  • Replace input/turbine speed sensor A if its output is outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair a damaged internal sensing target if inspection confirms it is the source.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid towing or hard acceleration while the input speed reading is unreliable. Stop if the transmission slips, shudders, or enters limp mode, since incorrect speed data can lead to poor shifting and added wear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
