OBD-II fault code

P06DC: Engine Oil Pressure Control Circuit High

What it means

The engine oil pressure control circuit voltage is above the expected range. The exact component and resulting oil-pressure behavior depend on the vehicle.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The engine oil-pressure control circuit carries the module's command to an oil-pressure regulating component, whose design depends on the engine. P06DC sets when the module detects voltage above the circuit's expected range, often indicating a control wire contacting a power source; it does not reveal actual oil pressure.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control line shorted to supply
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and related codes, then check for an oil-pressure warning or unusual engine noise before operating the engine.
  2. Use service information to locate the oil-pressure control component and inspect its harness for pinching or insulation damage where it could touch a supply wire.
  3. Check the connector for corrosion, loose pins, or heat damage that could interfere with the control signal.
  4. Measure the circuit at the component and module connectors under the manufacturer's specified conditions and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the voltage remains high, isolate the harness and component using the vehicle's procedure to distinguish a short to supply from a failed control component or module output.

Common fixes

  • Repair a pinched or damaged control wire that is shorted to a power feed.
  • Clean or repair loose or corroded terminals at the oil-pressure control connector.
  • Repair the confirmed wiring short or replace the control component if it fails the specified test.
  • Clear the code after repair and verify circuit operation; perform a relearn if the vehicle requires one.

Can I keep driving?

If an oil-pressure warning appears or the engine becomes noisy, stop the engine and do not drive until actual pressure is checked; high circuit voltage does not confirm safe oil pressure. If there is no warning and the engine sounds normal, limit driving and arrange prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
