What it means
The engine oil pressure control circuit voltage is below the expected range. The exact component and resulting oil-pressure behavior depend on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The oil-pressure control circuit carries the module's electrical command to a component that regulates oil pressure, with the exact design varying by engine. P06DB sets when the circuit voltage is below the expected range; it does not establish whether mechanical oil pressure is low or high.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control line shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible limp mode or no-start
- Multiple follow-up faults across modules
- Reset/relearn may be needed after repair
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and related codes, and check for an oil-pressure warning or abnormal engine noise before deciding whether the engine can be run.
- Locate the oil-pressure control component using vehicle-specific service information and inspect its wiring for chafing or exposed conductors contacting ground.
- Inspect the control-component connector for corrosion, damaged terminals, or poor fit that could cause a low circuit reading.
- Measure the circuit voltage and check for shorts to ground and feed or ground faults using the manufacturer's test procedure and specifications.
- If the harness and connections pass, test the control component and module output as specified, and verify actual oil pressure independently when the vehicle indicates a pressure concern.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed wiring that is shorting the oil-pressure control circuit to ground.
- Clean or repair corroded connector pins and restore proper terminal tension.
- Repair a confirmed feed or ground fault in the control circuit.
- Replace the control component or module only if it fails the manufacturer's test; clear the code after repair.
Can I keep driving?
If the oil-pressure warning is lit, the engine is noisy, or actual pressure may be low, shut it off and do not drive because engine damage can occur quickly. With no warning and normal engine sound, keep driving to a minimum and get the circuit and oil pressure checked promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
