OBD-II fault code

P06DA: Engine Oil Pressure Control Circuit Open

What it means

The control module has detected an open circuit in the engine oil pressure control circuit. The code does not establish the engine’s resulting oil pressure; check the vehicle-specific information if an oil-pressure warning is present.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The engine oil pressure control circuit lets the control module command an oil-pressure control component, such as a regulating solenoid on some designs. P06DA sets when the module detects an open electrical path in that control circuit; it does not by itself say what the engine's actual oil pressure is.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or damaged wiring
  2. Loose or corroded connector
  3. Fault in the oil-pressure control component

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and related codes, and note whether an oil-pressure warning is present before running the engine further.
  2. Use vehicle service information to identify the oil-pressure control component and inspect its connector and nearby wiring for disconnection, corrosion, or physical damage.
  3. Check the circuit fuse and power or ground feeds only as specified for the vehicle, since an interrupted feed can resemble an open control circuit.
  4. With the circuit isolated as directed by the manufacturer, test continuity from the module connector to the oil-pressure control component and check for poor terminal fit.
  5. If the wiring is intact, test the control component and module output according to the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure; verify actual oil pressure separately if indicated.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose oil-pressure control connector and secure the harness.
  • Clean or repair corroded terminals or damaged wiring that leaves the control circuit open.
  • Replace the oil-pressure control component if it fails the specified electrical test.
  • Clear the code and perform any required relearn after confirming the circuit operates correctly.

Can I keep driving?

If the red oil-pressure warning is on, the engine is noisy, or oil pressure is uncertain, stop the engine and do not drive until pressure is checked; low oil pressure can quickly damage the engine. If there is no pressure warning and the engine sounds normal, drive only as needed for prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
