What it means
The control module has detected an incorrect condition in the cylinder 7 glow plug circuit. The code does not by itself establish that the wrong plug type was fitted.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The glow plug in cylinder 7 heats the air in that cylinder to support diesel starting and clean combustion when the engine is cold. The control module monitors the cylinder 7 glow plug circuit and sets this code when its electrical response is incorrect; it does not by itself prove the plug is the wrong type.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty glow plug
- Damaged or corroded wiring or connector
- Glow plug control circuit fault
Symptoms
- Glow plug warning light on (often orange coil symbol)
- Hard cold start or no start in cold weather
- White smoke from exhaust during warm-up
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan for related glow-plug codes to determine whether the cylinder 7 fault is isolated or accompanies a broader circuit issue.
- Inspect the cylinder 7 glow plug connector and harness for corrosion, a loose fit, heat damage, or rubbing against engine components.
- Measure the cylinder 7 plug's resistance or current draw and compare it with the manufacturer's specification and readings from other cylinders.
- Check the cylinder 7 circuit wiring for an open or short between the plug and its control point, using the vehicle wiring diagram.
- If the plug and harness check out, verify the glow-plug control circuit output using the manufacturer's test procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and reconnect the cylinder 7 glow plug connector.
- Repair chafed, broken, or corroded wiring in the cylinder 7 circuit.
- Replace the cylinder 7 glow plug if it fails the specified test.
- Repair the glow-plug control circuit if testing identifies an output or connection fault.
Can I keep driving?
A vehicle that starts and runs normally may be driven cautiously, but cold starting can worsen and white smoke or emissions may increase during warm-up. If it struggles to start, avoid prolonged cranking and arrange diagnosis before cold weather makes the fault more disruptive.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
