OBD-II fault code

P06CF: Cylinder 11 Glow Plug Incorrect

What it means

The control module has detected an incorrect condition in the cylinder 11 glow plug circuit. The code does not by itself establish that the wrong plug type was fitted.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The glow plug in cylinder 11 warms the cylinder for more reliable cold starting and cleaner early combustion in a diesel engine. The control module monitors the cylinder 11 glow plug circuit and records this code when its electrical response is incorrect; the code alone does not confirm a mismatched plug.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty glow plug
  2. Damaged or corroded wiring or connector
  3. Glow plug control circuit fault

Symptoms

  • Glow plug warning light on (often orange coil symbol)
  • Hard cold start or no start in cold weather
  • White smoke from exhaust during warm-up

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check for related glow-plug codes to identify whether the cylinder 11 fault is tied to a cold start or a shared circuit issue.
  2. Inspect the cylinder 11 glow plug connector and wiring for corrosion, a loose terminal, heat damage, or chafing.
  3. Measure the cylinder 11 plug resistance or current draw and compare it with the manufacturer's specification and other cylinders.
  4. Check continuity and unwanted shorts in the cylinder 11 wiring between the plug and its controller connection.
  5. If the plug and harness pass, test the cylinder 11 control-circuit output using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the cylinder 11 glow plug connector.
  • Repair an open, corroded, or chafed section of cylinder 11 wiring.
  • Replace the cylinder 11 glow plug if it fails the specified electrical test.
  • Repair the glow-plug control circuit if its output test reveals a fault.

Can I keep driving?

Driving may be possible if the engine runs normally, though cold starting can become unreliable and warm-up smoke or emissions may rise. If the engine is difficult to start, stop repeated cranking and have the cylinder 11 circuit checked before colder conditions worsen the problem.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
