OBD-II fault code

P06E1: Cylinder 11 Glow Plug Control Circuit High

What it means

The cylinder 11 glow plug control circuit voltage is above the expected range. The cause may be the plug, its wiring or connections, or the control circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine controller monitors the cylinder 11 glow plug control circuit during diesel preheating. P06E1 sets when the circuit voltage is higher than expected, which can happen if the cylinder 11 plug or wiring is open or if its supply wire is contacting battery voltage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in plug or wiring
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Glow plug warning light on (often orange coil symbol)
  • Hard cold start or no start in cold weather
  • White smoke from exhaust during warm-up

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and check whether other glow plug circuit codes are present, noting whether they also point to high voltage.
  2. Identify cylinder 11 from the vehicle's cylinder layout and inspect its glow plug wiring for breaks, disconnected plugs, pinched sections, or contact with a power source.
  3. Check the cylinder 11 connector for corrosion, loose terminals, or pins that have backed out.
  4. Test the cylinder 11 circuit for an open and for an unintended connection to battery positive, following the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the wiring passes, test the cylinder 11 glow plug and control output against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose cylinder 11 glow plug connector.
  • Repair an open or damaged wire in the cylinder 11 control circuit.
  • Repair wiring pinched against a battery-positive supply or other power source.
  • Replace the cylinder 11 glow plug or repair its control output if testing confirms the fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally when warm, limited driving may be possible, but cold starting can become difficult and warm-up smoke may increase. Arrange diagnosis before relying on the vehicle in cold weather, when it may fail to start.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
