What it means
Same as P0661 on bank 2. The intake manifold runner control (IMRC) flaps tune intake geometry for filling efficiency across the rpm range; stuck flaps cost part-load torque and can set lean codes.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The intake manifold tuning valve on Bank 2 changes the intake runner path to suit engine speed and load. This code sets when the control module detects that the Bank 2 valve-control circuit voltage is lower than expected, commonly because the control wire is shorted to ground or a connection has excessive resistance.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control line shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible limp mode or no-start
- Multiple follow-up faults across modules
- Reset/relearn may be needed after repair
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for related intake-valve faults, then check live data for the Bank 2 valve command and any circuit status the scan tool provides.
- Identify Bank 2 from the vehicle’s service information and inspect the actuator connector and harness for chafing, crushed insulation, corrosion, or loose terminals.
- Check whether the Bank 2 tuning valve or linkage binds, but do not assume a stuck valve explains the low circuit signal.
- Use the wiring diagram to test the control circuit for a short to ground and measure terminal condition and continuity using the manufacturer’s procedure.
- If the wiring and connector pass, test the actuator and module control output against the manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed Bank 2 valve-control wiring that is contacting ground.
- Clean or repair corroded, loose, or high-resistance connector terminals.
- Replace a failed Bank 2 actuator if testing confirms it is pulling the circuit low.
- Repair the control-module output only if the wiring and actuator test correctly.
Can I keep driving?
A short, gentle trip may be possible if the engine runs normally, but the Bank 2 valve may remain inactive and reduce performance or efficiency. Avoid hard acceleration if power is reduced, and stop if the engine runs poorly or other serious warnings appear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
