What it means
The control module has detected an open circuit or fault in sensor reference voltage circuit A. Sensors supplied by this reference circuit may give invalid readings; which sensors are affected depends on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The control module supplies sensor reference voltage through circuit A to one or more sensors; the exact sensors vary by vehicle. P0641 sets when the module detects an open or electrical fault in this reference circuit, which can make connected sensor readings invalid and trigger related faults.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Reference wire shorted to ground (one defective sensor pulls the rail down)
- ECM internal reference output failed
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible limp mode or no-start
- Multiple follow-up faults across modules
- Reset/relearn may be needed after repair
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and record freeze-frame data and related sensor codes to identify which readings sharing reference circuit A became implausible at the same time.
- Use the vehicle wiring information to identify the sensors supplied by reference A, then inspect their connectors and the shared harness for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or damage.
- Check the reference-A circuit and its connector continuity using the manufacturer's procedure, looking for a disconnected terminal or broken wire.
- Test each sensor branch for a short to ground that could pull down or disrupt the shared reference, isolating branches only as specified by the manufacturer.
- If the harness and sensor branches are sound, verify the module's reference output and connector terminals before considering an internal module fault.
Common fixes
- Seat a pushed-back or loose reference-A terminal and repair poor connector contact.
- Repair a broken or open reference-A wire or harness connection.
- Replace a sensor that is shorting the shared reference circuit after confirming it by isolation testing.
- Repair damaged module connector pins or wiring.
- Replace or repair the control module only if its reference output is faulty and external circuits test correctly.
Can I keep driving?
Because reference circuit A can serve several sensors, the engine may enter limp mode, run poorly, or fail to start; avoid driving if throttle, engine, or transmission behavior is abnormal. Continued operation with invalid sensor readings can cause stalling or poor emissions control.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
