OBD-II fault code

P062C: Internal Control Module Vehicle Speed Performance

What it means

The control module detected a performance problem related to vehicle speed. The code alone does not establish an internal processing fault or exclude a speed-signal issue.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The control module uses vehicle-speed information from the vehicle's speed-signal circuits to coordinate functions such as engine and transmission control. P062C sets when the module detects a vehicle-speed-related performance problem; the cause may be the speed signal or its wiring, not necessarily an internal module failure.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Vehicle-speed signal or circuit fault
  2. Poor connector contact or damaged speed-signal wiring
  3. Low or unstable control-module power or ground
  4. Control-module hardware or software fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan all modules for speed-signal, communication, and low-voltage codes to see whether the fault is shared across systems.
  2. Compare vehicle-speed readings from the engine and transmission modules with the instrument display and a safe road-speed reading during a controlled drive.
  3. Inspect the relevant speed-signal connectors and wiring for loose contacts, corrosion, damage, or poor routing near moving parts.
  4. Check the speed-signal circuit and sensor inputs using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure, looking for dropouts or implausible readings.
  5. Verify control-module power and grounds, then investigate module programming or hardware only if the speed signal and wiring test correctly.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or poorly connected vehicle-speed signal wiring.
  • Clean and secure the affected speed-signal connector.
  • Repair a confirmed fault in the speed-signal source or circuit.
  • Restore stable module power or ground.
  • Complete required module programming or relearn after the underlying fault is repaired.

Can I keep driving?

If the speed display or shifting is erratic, or the vehicle enters reduced-power mode, avoid high-speed driving and use a safe route to have it checked; speed-related systems may not respond reliably. Stop if the vehicle loses propulsion or will not start.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
