What it means
The fuel pump A control circuit has a range or performance fault. This code does not by itself establish that fuel pressure is out of range or identify a worn pump.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The fuel pump control system switches or regulates power to fuel pump A, while the control module checks whether the circuit responds as expected. P062A sets when the observed control-circuit performance falls outside its expected range; it does not prove that fuel pressure is wrong or that the pump itself is worn.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fuel-pump control wiring open, shorted, or high resistance
- Poor fuel-pump control module connector or ground
- Fuel-pump control module fault
- Fuel-pump control output fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
- Power loss especially at high load or rpm
- Possible long cranking time
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related fuel-pressure, pump-control, and low-voltage codes to see when the fault occurred and whether it points to a wider power problem.
- Compare commanded pump operation with available fuel-pressure and pump-control data during cranking and, if safe, under load.
- Inspect pump A's wiring, connectors, control-module connector, and grounds for corrosion, looseness, chafing, heat damage, or moisture.
- With the circuit safely isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check the pump-control wiring for opens, shorts, and excessive resistance.
- Verify control-module power and ground under load, then test its pump-control output against the manufacturer's specification before condemning a module or pump.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged or chafed fuel-pump control wiring.
- Clean and secure corroded or loose pump and control-module connectors.
- Repair a poor fuel-pump control-module ground or power connection.
- Replace a faulty fuel-pump control module or control output only after circuit tests confirm the fault.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine starts and runs normally, limit driving and avoid hard acceleration or heavy loads because pump-control trouble can cause sudden power loss or stalling. Do not drive if it stalls, is difficult to start, or loses power in traffic.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
