OBD-II fault code

P0613: TCM Processor

What it means

The transmission control module has a processor fault. The code does not by itself establish a particular symptom or operating mode.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The transmission control module (TCM) uses its processor to interpret transmission inputs and manage gear changes. P0613 sets when the TCM reports a processor fault; the code alone does not establish the vehicle's exact operating mode or prove that the TCM hardware has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. TCM internal fault
  2. Unstable supply voltage
  3. Module software outdated, reflash may resolve

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for TCM processor, communication, and voltage faults before clearing codes.
  2. Check battery condition and charging-system operation, then inspect TCM power, ground, and network connections for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  3. Inspect the TCM harness and connectors for water entry, bent pins, chafing, or poor contact that could interrupt power or communication.
  4. Check TCM software and calibration against manufacturer service information for an applicable update, especially if the fault began after programming or module work.
  5. If supply, grounds, wiring, and software are sound, follow the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to confirm an internal TCM fault before replacement or programming.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure poor TCM power, ground, or connector contacts.
  • Repair damaged TCM wiring or network connections.
  • Update or reprogram the TCM if manufacturer information identifies a relevant correction.
  • Replace and program the TCM if tests confirm an internal processor fault.

Can I keep driving?

If shifting is harsh, unpredictable, or the transmission is stuck in one gear, avoid high-speed trips and have the vehicle checked promptly; limp mode can limit acceleration and damage may worsen if the transmission is slipping. Stop if you cannot safely control the vehicle's speed or gear response.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
