What it means
The engine control module and transmission control module are incompatible. The code does not by itself establish that a recent module replacement caused the mismatch.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The ECM manages engine functions and the TCM manages transmission functions, and their software and configuration must be compatible for coordinated operation. P0614 sets when the modules are identified as incompatible; this can result from mismatched calibrations or module programming, but the code alone does not prove a recent replacement caused it.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- ECM and TCM software or calibration mismatch
- Replacement ECM or TCM with an incompatible part number
- Incorrect module programming or configuration
- Communication or power-supply fault affecting module identification
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible limp mode or no-start
- Multiple follow-up faults across modules
- Reset/relearn may be needed after repair
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan both the ECM and TCM for identification, configuration, communication, and voltage faults.
- Record each module's identification and calibration information, then compare it with the manufacturer's compatibility information for the vehicle and installed equipment.
- If either module was recently replaced or programmed, verify that it is the correct compatible unit and that programming completed successfully.
- Inspect module power, grounds, and network wiring for faults that could disrupt identification or communication between the ECM and TCM.
- Use manufacturer programming information to correct any calibration or configuration mismatch, and verify compatibility again before replacing either module.
Common fixes
- Repair module power, ground, or network connection faults that interfere with identification.
- Program the ECM or TCM with the compatible calibration and configuration specified for the vehicle.
- Replace an incompatible replacement ECM or TCM with a compatible unit, then program it correctly.
- Complete any required manufacturer relearn or initialization after programming.
Can I keep driving?
Driving may be possible if shifting and engine response are normal, but incompatible module settings can trigger limp mode, poor shifting, or a no-start. Avoid long trips if transmission behavior changes, and stop if the vehicle cannot shift or accelerate predictably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
