What it means
The control module detected a performance problem in its main processor. The code alone does not identify the cause or establish a particular operating strategy.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The engine control module (ECM) uses its main processor to run engine-control tasks and check that they complete and respond as expected. P060C sets when the module detects that its main processor is not performing within its internal criteria; the code alone does not identify whether the processor, its power supply, or software is responsible.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Main processor internal fault
- Module software outdated, reflash may resolve
- Supply voltage outside specification
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible limp mode or no-start
- Multiple follow-up faults across modules
- Reset/relearn may be needed after repair
How to diagnose it
- Save the freeze-frame data and scan all modules for voltage, communication, and processor-related faults to see whether P060C appeared with a wider electrical problem.
- Check battery condition and charging-system operation, then inspect the ECM power and ground connections for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
- Inspect the ECM connectors and harness for water entry, bent pins, chafing, or poor contact that could interrupt processor power or signals.
- Compare the ECM calibration with current manufacturer service information and check whether an applicable software update addresses this fault.
- If power, grounds, connectors, and software are correct, follow the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to confirm an internal ECM fault before replacement or programming.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose battery, ECM power, and ground connections.
- Repair damaged wiring or connector terminals at the ECM.
- Update or reprogram the ECM if manufacturer information identifies a relevant software correction.
- Replace and program the ECM if testing confirms an internal processor fault.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, limit driving to necessary trips and watch for stalling, loss of power, or warning lights; a processor fault can progress to limp mode or a no-start. Stop somewhere safe if the vehicle becomes unreliable, and avoid relying on it for a long trip.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
