OBD-II fault code

P0501: Vehicle Speed Sensor A Range/Performance

What it means

The VSS signal is present but inconsistent — either values jump implausibly or the sensor reports a speed inconsistent with engine RPM in gear. Often a damaged reluctor ring or a sensor with degraded magnetic response.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Vehicle speed sensor A reports vehicle speed to the ECU. P0501 sets when the signal is present but its values are erratic or do not fit the vehicle's expected speed pattern, such as disagreeing with engine speed and gear conditions.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor signal intermittent
  2. Reluctor tooth damaged
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Speedometer reading erratically
  • Cruise control may not work
  • Automatic transmission shifts may feel abnormal

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and graph live vehicle speed while driving safely to see whether the signal jumps, drops out, or disagrees with the speedometer.
  2. Inspect sensor A's wiring and connector for intermittent contact, chafing, or damage that could disturb the signal.
  3. Use service information to locate sensor A's target or reluctor and inspect it for damaged, missing, or contaminated features.
  4. Check sensor alignment and its signal waveform or output using the manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. If the target and wiring are intact, test sensor A for weak or inconsistent output against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure or repair an intermittent connector at vehicle speed sensor A.
  • Repair chafed or damaged signal wiring.
  • Repair or replace a damaged sensor target or reluctor, where serviceable.
  • Replace vehicle speed sensor A if its signal remains outside specification.

Can I keep driving?

Use caution and avoid cruise control if the speedometer jumps or transmission shifts feel abnormal. An unreliable speed signal can cause unexpected shifting or loss of speed-dependent functions, so arrange diagnosis promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
