OBD-II fault code

P0601: Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error

What it means

The control module detected an error in its internal memory checksum. This can indicate a module memory or software problem; the code alone does not identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The control module checks data in its internal memory against a checksum to detect corruption. P0601 sets when that integrity check fails, which can follow an interrupted flash, a software problem, or an internal module fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Failed flash / interrupted programming
  2. Module hardware failure
  3. Module software outdated, reflash may resolve

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and all module codes before clearing anything, since several related faults may point to a shared power or programming event.
  2. Check battery condition and module power and ground connections for looseness, corrosion, or signs of interruption that could have affected memory integrity.
  3. Review service history for a recent failed or interrupted module flash and confirm the installed module is correct for the vehicle.
  4. Check the manufacturer's service information for an applicable software update or approved reprogramming procedure.
  5. If the code returns after power and software checks, test the module circuits to specification and consider an internal module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged module power or ground connection.
  • Restore stable battery and charging-system operation if voltage problems are present.
  • Reprogram the module with the correct software using the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Replace and configure the module if its internal memory fault is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally and the warning light is steady, limit driving to essential short trips and watch for loss of power or stalling. Avoid driving if it enters limp mode, runs erratically, or will not restart, since the module fault can cause unreliable engine control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
