What it means
During cold-start the ECU runs an elevated rail pressure on direct-injection systems for better cold spray atomisation. The pressure target on bank 2 is not reached within the calibrated time window - typical for a high-pressure pump that loses output when cold or a pressure regulator with cold-stickiness.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
On systems that monitor bank-specific cold-start fuel pressure, the engine control module checks whether bank 2 reaches its requested pressure within the allowed time after a cold start. P05FC means pressure performance on bank 2 did not meet that check; it does not by itself prove whether the pump, pressure control, sensor, or wiring is at fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fuel pressure too low during cold start
- Fuel pressure regulator or control fault
- Faulty pressure sensor or wiring
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
- Power loss especially at high load or rpm
- Possible long cranking time
How to diagnose it
- Before clearing codes, record freeze-frame data and note engine temperature, cranking time, and bank 2 fuel-pressure readings during the cold-start event.
- Inspect bank 2 fuel-pressure sensor wiring and connectors for damage, looseness, corrosion, or heat exposure, and check for fuel leaks.
- Compare commanded and measured bank 2 fuel pressure during a cold start using scan-tool data and the manufacturer's specification.
- Check the bank 2 pressure sensor signal and circuit for plausible readings and wiring faults before replacing the sensor.
- If sensor readings and wiring are sound, test the relevant pressure regulator and high-pressure fuel supply using the vehicle's service procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose or damaged bank 2 pressure-sensor connector or wire.
- Replace a faulty bank 2 fuel-pressure sensor if its signal fails testing.
- Repair or replace a pressure regulator or control component if testing confirms it cannot maintain cold-start pressure.
- Repair a weak high-pressure fuel supply component if it fails the specified pressure test.
Can I keep driving?
Hard starting, stalling, or power loss can make driving unreliable, particularly under load; avoid high-load driving if these symptoms occur. If the engine stalls or will not start reliably, stop driving and have the fuel-pressure fault diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
