What it means
Same as P05F9 with the signal shorted to ground. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The stop-start status signal reports whether the engine is running or automatically stopped. P05FA sets when the signal circuit voltage is lower than expected, commonly because the signal wire is shorted to ground or a connector has a poor connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Stop-start may be unavailable or operate inconsistently
- Check-engine or stop-start warning light may illuminate
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for related stop-start or communication codes to determine when the low signal was detected.
- Inspect the signal wire and connectors for chafing, water intrusion, corrosion, pushed-back pins, or contact with ground.
- Check live data while gently moving the accessible harness; note whether the stop-start status reading changes or the fault returns.
- Using the wiring diagram, measure the signal circuit and check for a short to ground or excessive resistance against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring is sound, test the signal source and receiving module connections before condemning either component.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose connector pins.
- Repair insulation where the signal wire is chafing against ground.
- Repair a pushed-back terminal or damaged connector seal that is allowing water in.
- Replace a faulty status-signal source only after the circuit tests correctly.
Can I keep driving?
The stop-start system may be unavailable or inconsistent, while the code by itself does not establish a general driving safety problem. Monitor for additional warnings or engine-running issues and arrange diagnosis if the fault persists.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
