OBD-II fault code

P05F7: Exhaust Aftertreatment Power Relay Control Circuit Stuck Off

What it means

The control module monitors the exhaust aftertreatment power relay and checks whether it energizes when commanded. It sets this code when the relay remains off instead of switching on as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The exhaust aftertreatment power relay supplies electrical power to parts of the emissions-treatment system when the control module requests it. The module checks whether the relay switches on, and sets P05F7 when the relay control circuit indicates that it has stayed off.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Relay or control circuit fails to energize
  2. Open or faulty wiring

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light or emissions warning may illuminate
  • Aftertreatment system fault message may appear

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and check whether other aftertreatment or relay codes point to a shared power or control problem.
  2. With the vehicle off, inspect the aftertreatment relay, its connector, and nearby wiring for corrosion, looseness, heat damage, or broken conductors.
  3. Check the relay and its fuse for continuity or visible damage, following the vehicle wiring diagram.
  4. When the module commands the relay on, measure the relay's supply and control circuits and compare them with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring and relay test correctly, check whether the module is providing the expected command before considering a module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged relay connector.
  • Repair an open or damaged wire in the relay control circuit.
  • Replace a failed fuse with the specified type after checking for the cause of failure.
  • Replace the aftertreatment power relay if it fails testing.
  • Repair or replace a faulty control module only after verifying its power, ground, wiring, and command.

Can I keep driving?

The warning may indicate that emissions aftertreatment components are not receiving power, though the code alone does not establish whether the vehicle is unsafe to drive. Avoid prolonged driving if an aftertreatment warning appears or the vehicle loses power, and arrange diagnosis soon because emissions control may be impaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
