What it means
Same as P05F3 with the control line shorted to ground. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The exhaust aftertreatment power relay control circuit signals the relay that supplies power to emissions-control equipment. The control module sets P05F4 when the control line is pulled lower than expected, commonly because it is shorted to ground or has a circuit fault. The code does not mean all aftertreatment equipment is unpowered.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control line shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check-engine light or emissions warning may illuminate
- Aftertreatment system fault message may appear
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live relay command and status to see when the control line reads low.
- Inspect the relay control wire and connectors for chafing against grounded metal, moisture, corrosion, or damaged terminals.
- Check the relay and socket for heat damage and verify the control wire routing against the wiring diagram.
- Measure the control-line state at the relay and module while the relay is commanded, using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the low state persists, isolate the circuit as specified and test the control wire for a short to ground before considering a relay or module fault.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed control wiring that is contacting ground.
- Clean and repair corroded or moisture-damaged relay connector terminals.
- Replace a relay confirmed to be faulty.
- Repair a confirmed module control fault after ruling out a grounded harness.
Can I keep driving?
You may be able to drive if the vehicle has no other symptoms, but the relay may not switch aftertreatment power correctly and emissions control can be affected. Limit driving and heed any emissions countdown or starting restriction.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
