What it means
An open is detected in the exhaust aftertreatment power relay control circuit. The code does not establish that every aftertreatment component is unpowered.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The exhaust aftertreatment power relay switches electrical power to parts of the emissions-control system. The control module monitors the relay's control circuit and sets P05F3 when it detects an open in that control path. This code does not establish that every aftertreatment component has lost power.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in relay control or harness
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- Check-engine light or emissions warning may illuminate
- Aftertreatment system fault message may appear
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for related relay or aftertreatment codes to identify which operating conditions triggered the open-circuit fault.
- Inspect the relay, socket, and control harness for loose or corroded terminals, a pushed-back pin, or damaged wiring.
- Check the relay fuse and verify the relay's control-side connections against the vehicle wiring diagram.
- Test continuity through the relay control wire with the circuit safely de-energized, then check for opens at connector and splice points.
- If the harness is intact, check the module connector and control output for a poor terminal connection or internal open.
Common fixes
- Reseat or repair a loose, corroded, or pushed-back relay control terminal.
- Replace a failed relay or fuse after confirming the circuit has no short or overload.
- Repair an open or damaged section of the control harness.
- Repair a confirmed module connector or control output fault.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle runs normally, limited driving may be possible, but aftertreatment components may not receive the expected power and emissions performance can suffer. Take any emissions warning or countdown seriously and avoid extended driving until the relay circuit is repaired.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
