OBD-II fault code

P05DF: Brake Pedal Position Sensor B Circuit Intermittent or Erratic

What it means

Same as P057E on sensor B. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Brake pedal position sensor B sends a changing signal to the control module as the pedal moves. This code sets when that signal drops out or varies unpredictably rather than changing consistently, often because of a loose connection or vibration-sensitive wiring fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intermittent contact at connector
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Brake or check-engine warning light may illuminate
  • Brake-related functions may operate inconsistently

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and record live sensor B readings while slowly pressing and releasing the pedal, comparing them with sensor A.
  2. Inspect sensor B's connector for loose fit, corrosion, moisture, or terminals that may lose contact under vibration.
  3. With live readings displayed, gently move the connector and harness to try to reproduce a signal dropout.
  4. Inspect the harness route for chafing or contact with vibrating components, and check terminal fit and circuit continuity using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If connections and wiring remain stable, test sensor B for an intermittent internal fault.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose sensor B connector and support the harness against vibration.
  • Repair chafed wiring and reroute it away from moving or vibrating parts.
  • Clean or replace terminals with intermittent contact.
  • Replace sensor B if its output remains erratic with a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Brake-related electronic functions may work inconsistently, so avoid relying on stop-start or other assistance until the fault is diagnosed. If a brake warning appears or braking behavior changes, stop safely and seek prompt inspection.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
