What it means
The control module detects an intermittent signal in the Brake Pedal Position Sensor A circuit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The control module monitors Brake Pedal Position Sensor A continuously as the brake pedal moves. P057E sets when the signal cuts in and out instead of remaining stable for the pedal position, often because vibration or harness movement interrupts a connector or wire contact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent contact at connector
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check-engine light may come on
- Cruise control may not engage or may disengage unexpectedly
- Brake lights may behave erratically
- Brake pedal position display or related system response may be inconsistent
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and watch sensor A live data while slowly operating the brake pedal to see whether the reading drops out.
- Check brake lights during repeated pedal operation and inspect the sensor A connector for loose fit, corrosion, or pin movement.
- With the vehicle stationary, gently move the sensor harness and connector while watching the live signal for dropouts.
- Inspect the harness routing for rubbing or vibration against nearby components and check continuity while flexing suspect sections.
- Compare the sensor signal and circuit behavior with the manufacturer's specification before replacing the sensor or module.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose sensor A connector and clean or replace intermittent terminals.
- Repair a wire that loses continuity when moved and secure the harness away from rubbing or vibration.
- Replace Brake Pedal Position Sensor A if its signal cuts out while the wiring remains stable.
- Repair or replace the related module only if sensor and wiring tests are consistent.
Can I keep driving?
An intermittent signal can cause cruise control to disengage unexpectedly and may make brake-light operation inconsistent. Check the lights before driving, avoid cruise control, and stop if brake response or lighting becomes unreliable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
