OBD-II fault code

P05DE: Brake Pedal Position Sensor B Circuit High

What it means

Same as P057D on sensor B. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Brake pedal position sensor B sends a pedal-travel signal to the control module, which checks the signal circuit as the pedal moves. This code sets when the signal is higher than expected, often because the signal wire is shorted to a supply voltage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to supply
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Brake or check-engine warning light may illuminate
  • Stop-start or other brake-related functions may be unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and graph live readings for sensor B while comparing them with sensor A through pedal travel.
  2. Inspect sensor B's connector and harness for pinched or rubbed wiring, moisture, corrosion, and backed-out pins.
  3. With live data displayed, gently move the sensor B harness to see whether the high reading or fault status changes.
  4. Use the vehicle wiring diagram to check the sensor B signal wire for an unintended connection to a supply circuit.
  5. If wiring and terminals are sound, test sensor B and the control-module circuit according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair pinched or chafed sensor B signal wiring and route it clear of supply wires.
  • Clean or replace corroded connector terminals and damaged seals.
  • Reseat or repair a pushed-back sensor B connector pin.
  • Replace sensor B if testing confirms it is producing an abnormally high signal.

Can I keep driving?

Stop-start and other brake-related electronic functions may be limited while the code is present. If a brake warning appears or pedal feel or braking changes, stop safely and have the vehicle checked before continuing.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
