OBD-II fault code

P05E1: A/C Refrigerant Pressure Sensor A Circuit Intermittent or Erratic

What it means

The A/C refrigerant pressure sensor A circuit has an intermittent or erratic signal. The code does not establish the sensor’s location or whether the sensor or wiring is at fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

A/C refrigerant pressure sensor A sends pressure information to the control module so it can manage compressor operation and protect the system. This code sets when sensor A's circuit signal is intermittent or erratic, which can interrupt cooling or cause the controller to limit A/C operation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intermittent contact at connector
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • A/C may cool intermittently or less effectively
  • Check-engine or A/C warning light may illuminate

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live pressure readings for sensor A, comparing them with sensor B if available and with the A/C operating conditions.
  2. Identify sensor A from the vehicle wiring information, then inspect its connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, moisture, or chafing.
  3. Monitor the sensor A reading while gently moving its connector and harness to see whether the signal drops out or jumps.
  4. Check the sensor A circuit terminals and wiring for intermittent contact or damage using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the circuit is sound, test sensor A and compare its reported pressure with the system's measured pressure using the manufacturer's specifications.

Common fixes

  • Secure the sensor A connector and harness if loose.
  • Repair chafed wiring or replace corroded connector terminals and seals.
  • Repair an intermittent circuit connection identified during testing.
  • Replace sensor A if its signal remains erratic with a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

You can generally drive if the only effect is reduced or intermittent A/C cooling. Turn the A/C off if the compressor makes unusual noise or the system behaves abnormally, and arrange diagnosis to avoid continued compressor operation with unreliable pressure information.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
