What it means
Same as P05C2 with the signal voltage above the plausible range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The engine coolant pressure sensor reports pressure in the cooling system to the control module. The module sets P05C5 when the sensor signal is higher than the plausible range, which can happen if the signal wire is shorted to a power supply or the connection is faulty.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal shorted to supply
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Coolant pressure reading may be high or implausible
- A separate cooling-system fault may cause overheating or coolant loss
How to diagnose it
- Save the freeze-frame data and compare the scan-tool coolant-pressure reading with coolant temperature and engine state to see whether the reported pressure is credible.
- With the engine cool, inspect the pressure sensor connector and nearby harness for moisture, corrosion, pushed-back pins, chafing, or contact with a power wire.
- Watch the pressure reading while gently moving the harness near the sensor to check whether it changes or the fault returns.
- Use the wiring diagram to check the sensor reference, ground, and signal circuits for a short to supply or excessive resistance at the connector.
- If the wiring and connections pass, compare sensor output with the manufacturer's specification and test the sensor before replacing it.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a corroded or loose sensor connector, and repair damaged seals or terminals.
- Repair chafed wiring or separate a signal wire from a power source it is contacting.
- Replace a coolant pressure sensor that fails its specified output test.
- Repair any separate cooling-system fault found during diagnosis.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine temperature is normal and there is no coolant loss or warning of overheating, a short trip may be possible, but the pressure reading may be unreliable. Stop if the engine overheats or coolant escapes, since the sensor fault can obscure a separate cooling-system problem.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
