OBD-II fault code

P05C2: Engine Coolant Pressure Sensor Circuit

What it means

A general circuit fault is detected on the engine coolant pressure sensor - used to detect a pressurised coolant system that has lost pressure (cap, hose, head gasket leak) or is over-pressurised (combustion gases entering coolant).

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The engine coolant pressure sensor measures pressure in the cooling system, and the control module monitors its electrical signal. P05C2 indicates a general circuit fault in that sensor circuit; it does not by itself prove that coolant pressure is actually too low or too high.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Failed coolant pressure sensor
  2. Open or short in sensor wiring
  3. Loose or corroded connector

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Coolant pressure reading may be missing or implausible
  • A separate cooling-system fault may cause overheating or coolant loss

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to check coolant-pressure data and freeze-frame information, looking for a missing or implausible reading and any related cooling-system codes.
  2. When the engine is cool, inspect the coolant pressure sensor and connector for looseness, corrosion, damage, or coolant intrusion.
  3. Inspect the sensor wiring for breaks, shorts, or heat damage near the engine and cooling system.
  4. Check the sensor circuit’s power, ground, and signal wiring according to the manufacturer’s diagram and procedure.
  5. If the electrical circuit tests correctly, compare sensor readings with an appropriate mechanical pressure test and the manufacturer’s specification.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose or corroded sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged, open, or shorted coolant pressure sensor wiring.
  • Replace the coolant pressure sensor if its signal is faulty while the circuit is sound.
  • Repair a separate cooling-system leak or overpressure cause if testing confirms one.

Can I keep driving?

Do not rely on the pressure-sensor reading to judge whether the cooling system is safe. If coolant is leaking, the temperature rises, or a warning appears, stop safely and let the engine cool; never open a hot pressurized cooling system.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
