OBD-II fault code

P05B9: Restraint Deployment Signal Circuit Low

What it means

The control module monitors the voltage on the restraint deployment signal circuit. It sets this code when the signal is below the expected range; the code alone does not identify which restraint or system component is affected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The restraint control module monitors voltage on a deployment signal circuit used by the restraint system. This code sets when that signal falls below its expected range, but the code alone does not identify which restraint or component is involved.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Airbag or restraint warning light
  • A restraint system fault message may appear
  • Restraint system operation may be affected

How to diagnose it

  1. Read restraint-module codes and available event data with a scan tool that supports the vehicle's restraint system.
  2. Use the manufacturer's wiring information to identify the specific signal circuit associated with the code.
  3. Inspect accessible wiring and connectors on that circuit for rubbed-through insulation, corrosion, or a loose terminal.
  4. Have the circuit checked for a short to ground or excessive resistance using the manufacturer's restraint-system safety procedure.
  5. If the wiring tests correctly, test the connected restraint component and control module for a fault pulling the signal low.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged signal wiring that is shorted to ground.
  • Restore clean, secure connector contact on the identified restraint circuit.
  • Replace a restraint component confirmed to be pulling the signal below range.
  • Repair or replace the restraint control module only if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

The restraint warning indicates protection may be reduced or unavailable in a crash. Arrange prompt diagnosis and do not probe or handle restraint wiring unless following the manufacturer's safety procedure.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
