OBD-II fault code

P05B8: Restraint Deployment Signal Circuit Open

What it means

The control module detected an open in the restraint deployment signal circuit. The code identifies a fault in that signal circuit; it does not establish what post-crash actions the vehicle will take.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The restraint deployment signal circuit carries a signal monitored by the vehicle's restraint control system. This code sets when the module detects that the circuit is open, interrupting the expected signal; it does not by itself identify which restraint component is affected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in signal wire
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Airbag or restraint warning light
  • A restraint system fault message may appear
  • Restraint system operation may be affected

How to diagnose it

  1. Read the restraint system's stored codes and freeze-frame or event data with a scan tool capable of accessing that module.
  2. Use the vehicle's wiring information to identify the affected deployment signal circuit before inspecting it.
  3. Inspect accessible connectors and wiring on that circuit for damage, a loose connection, or a terminal pushed back in its housing.
  4. Test the circuit for continuity using the manufacturer's procedure, with the restraint system made safe as specified by the manufacturer.
  5. If the external wiring is intact, test the connected restraint component and control module for an internal open.

Common fixes

  • Restore a loose connector or correctly seat a pushed-back terminal using the manufacturer's restraint-system procedure.
  • Repair an open signal wire using an approved restraint-system repair method.
  • Replace a failed restraint component if testing identifies it as the source of the open.
  • Repair or replace a control module only after its internal fault is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

The restraint warning means airbag or other restraint protection may be reduced or unavailable in a crash. Arrange prompt diagnosis and avoid disturbing restraint wiring; use a qualified technician if the circuit's safe handling procedure is unknown.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
