What it means
Same as P0536 with intermittent or erratic signal. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
How it works
The evaporator temperature sensor reports evaporator temperature to the climate control module, which uses the reading to manage cooling and limit icing. P0539 sets when that signal becomes erratic or cuts in and out, often as a loose, damaged, or moisture-affected connection changes with vibration.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent contact at connector
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- A/C warning light may turn on
- Air conditioning may cool intermittently
- Airflow may decrease intermittently if the evaporator freezes
How to diagnose it
- Check scan-tool freeze-frame and live data for an evaporator temperature reading that jumps, drops out, or disagrees with conditions when the fault occurs.
- Inspect the sensor connector seals, terminals, and harness routing for moisture, corrosion, chafing, loose pins, or contact with a vibrating part.
- With live data displayed, gently move accessible sections of the sensor harness and connector to see whether the reading changes or the fault returns.
- Check continuity and terminal fit through the sensor circuit while flexing the harness, using the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
- Repair the identified connection or wiring fault, then operate the A/C and confirm the reading stays stable.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure a loose evaporator sensor connector.
- Clean and repair corroded or pushed-back terminals and restore damaged connector seals.
- Repair chafed wiring and reroute or secure the harness away from vibrating or moving parts.
- Replace the evaporator temperature sensor if its signal remains intermittent after the wiring checks.
Can I keep driving?
Driving is generally possible if the vehicle behaves normally, but cooling may cut in and out and airflow can fall if the evaporator freezes. Have the A/C fault addressed if you depend on it for clear windows.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
