OBD-II fault code

P0535: A/C Evaporator Temperature Sensor Circuit

What it means

The evaporator temperature sensor signal is missing or out of range. Used to prevent icing of the evaporator core.

How it works

The A/C evaporator temperature sensor measures the temperature of the evaporator core so the control system can reduce or stop cooling before ice blocks airflow. P0535 sets when the sensor circuit signal is missing or outside its expected electrical range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Evaporator temp sensor defective
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • A/C warning light may turn on
  • Air conditioning may cool poorly or inconsistently
  • Evaporator may freeze or airflow may decrease

How to diagnose it

  1. Review A/C codes and live data to see whether the evaporator temperature reading is absent, fixed, or outside the expected range.
  2. Inspect the evaporator temperature sensor connector and accessible wiring for loose contacts, corrosion, moisture, or damage.
  3. Check the sensor reference, ground, and signal circuit against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. Compare the scan-tool temperature reading with actual evaporator or nearby duct temperature as the A/C operates.
  5. If wiring is intact but the signal remains absent or out of range, test the evaporator temperature sensor using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean the evaporator temperature sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged or open sensor wiring.
  • Replace the evaporator temperature sensor if its signal is outside the specified range.
  • Confirm that A/C operation no longer causes evaporator icing or reduced airflow.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle is usually safe to drive, but cooling may be unreliable and airflow can fall if the evaporator freezes. Turn off the A/C if airflow steadily drops, and have the sensor fault addressed before relying on cooling.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
