OBD-II fault code

P053A: Positive Crankcase Ventilation Heater Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The heater on PCV path A - used to prevent ice plugs in the crankcase ventilation hose during cold weather - has an open control circuit. Without it, condensation can freeze and block PCV flow, raising crankcase pressure dangerously.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The PCV heater warms the crankcase ventilation path A to help keep moisture from freezing and blocking ventilation in cold conditions. The engine control module monitors the heater's control circuit and sets P053A when it detects an open circuit, so the heater may not operate when commanded.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in harness or heater element
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Possible rough idle or crankcase ventilation problems in cold weather

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and related codes, noting whether the fault occurred in cold conditions or with the PCV heater commanded on.
  2. Inspect the path A PCV heater connector, harness, and heater body for disconnection, damaged wiring, pushed-back pins, or signs of heat or moisture damage.
  3. Check the heater element and control circuit for continuity and an open, following the wiring diagram and manufacturer's test procedure.
  4. Verify the heater's power and control side under the specified test conditions to determine whether the open is in the element, wiring, connector, or control device.
  5. After repair, clear the code and confirm the circuit operates as commanded; in cold weather, also check that the PCV hose is not obstructed by ice or condensation.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the path A PCV heater connector and secure the harness.
  • Repair an open or damaged wire or terminal in the heater circuit.
  • Replace the path A PCV heater if its element is open.
  • Repair a confirmed failed control module or internal connection only after checking the heater and wiring.

Can I keep driving?

Short trips may be possible if the engine runs normally, but avoid prolonged use in freezing weather until the heater and PCV path are checked. A blocked or frozen ventilation hose can raise crankcase pressure and lead to oil leaks or engine damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
