OBD-II fault code

P052F: Glow Plug Control Module 1 System Voltage

What it means

Glow Plug Control Module 1 System Voltage: the control module has detected this fault condition. This affects diesel cold-start preheating.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Glow Plug Control Module 1 supplies and manages preheating for the diesel engine's glow plugs. The engine control module monitors the module's system voltage and sets P052F when that supply is below the expected range, which can prevent effective cold-start heating.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Supply voltage low
  2. Supply relay contact high resistance

Symptoms

  • Glow plug warning light on (often orange coil symbol)
  • Hard cold start or no start in cold weather
  • White smoke from exhaust during warm-up

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and battery voltage conditions when P052F set, noting whether the fault occurred during a cold start or while the glow plugs were active.
  2. Inspect the battery terminals, module power connections, and grounds for looseness, corrosion, or heat damage.
  3. Check the supply relay and its connector for damaged contacts or signs of high resistance.
  4. Measure voltage at Glow Plug Control Module 1 during preheating and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If supply and ground are sound, test the relay and module wiring for excessive voltage drop before condemning the module.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded battery or module connections.
  • Repair damaged supply or ground wiring to Glow Plug Control Module 1.
  • Replace the faulty supply relay.
  • Replace Glow Plug Control Module 1 if its supply is correct but system voltage remains out of range.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain drivable in mild weather, but cold starts can become difficult or impossible and warm-up smoke may increase. Avoid relying on it in cold conditions until the preheating supply is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
