What it means
The crankcase ventilation regulator valve - which throttles blow-by gas flow toward the intake based on engine load - is electrically intact but does not deliver the modelled pressure regulation. Either the valve diaphragm is fatigued or the spring is weak.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The positive crankcase ventilation regulator valve meters blow-by gas from the crankcase into the intake as engine load changes. The engine control module checks whether crankcase pressure follows the valve's expected regulation pattern; it sets P052E when the valve circuit appears intact but that pressure response is outside the modelled range.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Diaphragm fatigued
- Regulator spring weak
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Possible rough or unstable idle
- Possible oil leaks or increased oil consumption
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and compare crankcase pressure and engine load when P052E set to see under what conditions regulation failed.
- Inspect the PCV regulator valve, its hoses, and their connections for cracks, restrictions, oil saturation, or leaks that could alter pressure.
- Check the valve and hose routing against the vehicle's service information, since an incorrect connection can disrupt pressure regulation.
- Use a scan tool to compare live crankcase pressure with engine load and idle changes, looking for a response that is sluggish or inconsistent.
- If the valve circuit and hoses are intact, test the regulator diaphragm and spring operation using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or replace a cracked, loose, or restricted PCV hose.
- Clean or repair a blocked PCV passage.
- Replace the PCV regulator valve if its diaphragm or spring no longer regulates pressure correctly.
- Repair oil leaks or address increased oil consumption caused by abnormal crankcase pressure.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly and there are no significant oil leaks, short trips may be possible, but arrange diagnosis soon. Avoid extended driving if the idle becomes unstable or oil leaks worsen, since poor crankcase pressure control can increase oil loss.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
