OBD-II fault code

P052D: Cold Start A Camshaft Position Timing Over-Retarded Bank 2

What it means

During cold-start operation, the control module detects that the Bank 2 A camshaft timing is more retarded than expected. The cause may be in the cam timing system or its control; the code alone does not identify a failed part.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 2 A camshaft is the intake or exhaust cam identified as A for that engine bank; the manufacturer's cylinder layout defines which side is Bank 2. During a cold start, the module compares commanded and actual cam timing, and P052D sets when Bank 2 A remains more retarded than expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Camshaft phaser stuck or slow to respond in the retarded position
  2. Low, dirty, or incorrect engine oil affecting phaser operation
  3. Restricted oil passage or faulty oil control valve
  4. Camshaft timing or actuator wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and cold-start live data to verify that commanded and actual Bank 2 A timing differ in the retarded direction.
  2. Check oil level, condition, and viscosity against the vehicle specification because poor oil supply can slow phaser movement.
  3. Inspect the Bank 2 A actuator connector and wiring for damage, loose terminals, or oil contamination.
  4. Use a scan tool to compare Bank 2 A cam response with its command and with other cam timing readings during a supported actuator test.
  5. Test the Bank 2 A oil control valve and circuit, and check for restricted oil supply to that phaser using the manufacturer's procedure.
  6. If oil and electrical checks pass, inspect the Bank 2 A phaser and mechanical cam timing for sticking or misalignment.

Common fixes

  • Correct low oil or renew dirty or incorrect-viscosity oil and filter with the specified grade.
  • Repair damaged Bank 2 A actuator wiring or connector terminals.
  • Clean or replace a faulty Bank 2 A oil control valve after circuit checks.
  • Remove an identified restriction in the oil feed to the Bank 2 A phaser.
  • Repair a sticking Bank 2 A phaser or correct mechanical cam timing if testing confirms the cause.

Can I keep driving?

A steady warning light with normal engine operation may allow limited driving, but avoid hard acceleration and arrange diagnosis soon. Stop if the engine stalls, runs very roughly, or develops abnormal mechanical noise.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
