OBD-II fault code

P0503: Vehicle Speed Sensor A Circuit Intermittent Erratic or High

What it means

Same as P0502 with the signal noisy, erratic or above the plausible upper limit - typical for a chafed harness, missing reluctor tooth or a sensor with a weakened magnet.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Vehicle speed sensor A supplies the ECU with a signal representing vehicle speed. P0503 sets when that signal becomes erratic, noisy, intermittent, or higher than expected, which can happen when wiring contact or the sensor target is unstable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Noise on signal line or intermittent open
  2. Reluctor ring damaged or missing teeth
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Speedometer reading erratically or jumping
  • Cruise control may disengage or not work
  • Automatic transmission shifts may feel abnormal

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and graph live vehicle speed to determine whether the reading spikes, drops out, or changes with vibration.
  2. Inspect sensor A's connector and harness for loose contacts, chafing, damaged insulation, or routing near sources of electrical interference.
  3. Use vehicle service information to locate the target or reluctor and check for missing or damaged features and signs of physical contact.
  4. Check sensor A's signal circuit for intermittent opens, shorts, or noise using the manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. If wiring and target are sound, test sensor A's output and stability against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose sensor A connector or repair intermittent contacts.
  • Repair chafed wiring or a signal line affected by interference.
  • Repair or replace a damaged vehicle-speed target or reluctor, where serviceable.
  • Replace vehicle speed sensor A if its signal is noisy or out of range after circuit checks.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid cruise control and use caution if the speedometer jumps or transmission shifts change unexpectedly. An erratic speed signal can disrupt speed-dependent functions, so arrange diagnosis promptly and limit driving if speed cannot be judged reliably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
