What it means
The primary vehicle speed sensor (VSS A) reports a signal voltage below the plausible lower limit. With no usable speed signal the ECU loses cruise control, gear-shift logic and certain anti-stall functions.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Vehicle speed sensor A sends a signal used by the ECU to determine vehicle speed. P0502 sets when that signal is below the expected electrical range, commonly because the signal is being pulled low or the sensor cannot produce a usable output.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal shorted to ground
- Sensor internal short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Speedometer not working or reading low
- Cruise control unavailable
- Automatic transmission shifts may feel abnormal
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live vehicle speed to confirm the signal is low or absent when the vehicle is moving.
- Inspect sensor A's connector for corrosion, water, bent pins, or a poor fit that could create high contact resistance.
- Trace the sensor A signal wire for damage or a short to ground, paying attention to areas where the harness can rub or get wet.
- Check sensor supply, ground, and signal circuits as applicable against the manufacturer's wiring information.
- If the circuits are intact, test vehicle speed sensor A and its target using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean or repair corroded or loose contacts at sensor A's connector.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or other damaged wiring.
- Restore a faulty sensor ground or supply connection.
- Replace vehicle speed sensor A if its output remains below specification.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid cruise control and drive cautiously only if you can read vehicle speed reliably and shifting is normal. If the speedometer is inoperative or transmission behavior changes, limit driving because the ECU may lack a usable vehicle-speed signal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
