OBD-II fault code

P04DA: Closed Loop EGR Control At Limit Flow Too High

What it means

Same as P04D9 with the controller fully closing the actuator yet still measuring more EGR flow than required. The valve does not seat fully, or position feedback under-reads.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

In closed-loop EGR control, the module compares requested recirculation with measured flow while commanding the valve. This code sets when the controller has commanded the valve closed but feedback still indicates excessive EGR flow, often because the valve does not seat or its position signal is offset.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Valve does not seat fully (debris or wear)
  2. Position sensor offset

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live EGR data to confirm the valve is commanded closed while measured flow remains above the target.
  2. Inspect the EGR valve and seat for carbon or debris that could keep the valve from closing fully.
  3. Compare commanded valve position with reported position to check for a position sensor offset or inconsistent feedback.
  4. Inspect the valve connector and wiring for damage or poor contact that could distort position feedback.
  5. If the valve appears to seat and wiring is sound, compare flow and position readings with the manufacturer’s specification and diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Remove debris or carbon that prevents the EGR valve from seating, if serviceable.
  • Replace an EGR valve with a worn or damaged seat that leaks when closed.
  • Repair a loose or damaged position-sensor connector or wiring.
  • Replace a confirmed offset or faulty EGR position sensor.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration or continued driving if the engine idles roughly, hesitates, or loses power, since excess EGR can disrupt combustion. Arrange repair soon; poor running can worsen and emissions may rise.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
