What it means
Fuel Fill Door Unlock Control Circuit Open: the control circuit is open. Likely a broken wire, disconnected connector, or failed actuator.
How it works
The fuel-fill door unlock actuator releases the door when the control module commands it. P04BF sets when the module detects an open path in the unlock-control circuit, so current cannot flow as expected; the break may be in the harness, connector, actuator winding, or module connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in harness or actuator winding
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- Fuel-fill door may not unlock
- Fuel-fill door warning or status may be incorrect
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and command the fuel-fill door unlock with a scan tool, if supported, to confirm when the open is detected.
- Inspect the unlock actuator connector for disconnection, corrosion, moisture, or a terminal pushed back into the connector body.
- Trace the unlock-control wiring for breaks or damage, paying attention to bends and areas where the harness may rub.
- Test continuity through the harness and actuator winding using the wiring diagram and the manufacturer's specification.
- If the harness and actuator test correctly, check the module connector and output circuit for a loose connection or internal fault.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure a loose unlock-actuator connector.
- Repair a broken wire or replace a damaged terminal.
- Replace a failed unlock actuator if its winding is open.
- Repair a confirmed cracked module connection or replace the faulty module as specified by the manufacturer.
Can I keep driving?
You can generally drive if the fuel-fill door is closed and secure, but it may not release when you need to refuel. Do not force the door, since that can damage the latch or bodywork.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
